Blessin Bambo battles for rebounding position as Nate Matelic puts up a three pointer in action earlier this season against Monrovia.

After ten games, Speedway varsity basketball coach Chuck Bennett’s squad stood at 1-9.

Moving into the second phase of the regular season, Bennett’s squad was hoping for a resurgence. They displayed a lot of energy but they left the weekend still seeking a second win.

This past Friday night, the boys hosted Tri-West. Playing one of their best first halves of the season, the Sparkplugs trailed by one, 29-28 after a strong shooting performance from both the field and the free throw line. The Bruins were the better team in the second half in all areas and took a 61-47 win. Nate Matelic led all scorers with 23 points and Brice Robinson posted 11
points and eight rebounds for the Sparkplugs.

It was a similar story on Saturday night. The Sparkplugs trailed Western Boone 21-18 at the half but it was all WEBO in the second half as the host Stars outscored the Plugs 34-14 in a 55-32 final.

The Sparkplugs (1-12, 1-2 ICC) host Shortridge (7-7, 2-1 Pioneer) tonight before returning to Indiana Crossroads Conference play on Saturday evening when they host Cascade (6-9, 2-1 ICC).
