Giants, Sparkplugs win sectional openers

Ben Davis and Speedway opened girls basketball sectional play Tuesday night with wins.

The Class 4A lady Giants beat Southport 70-48 in Tuesday’s Southport Class 4A Sectional 11 opener. Tonight at Southport, Perry Meridian plays Franklin Central and Decatur Central faces Roncalli. The winners of tonight’s games will play in Friday’s second game following the 6 p.m. opener between Ben Davis and Pike.

In Class 3A Sectional 28 at Speedway, the host Sparkplugs beat Beech Grove 41-29 and Washington beat Christel House 42-24. Speedway will play Purdue Polytech in Friday’s 6 p.m. opener followed by Washington against Cardinal Ritter

In other games involving west side schools, Plainfield advanced in the Terre Haute South sectional with a 51-38 win over Terre Haute North. Plainfield will play Brownsburg in the second game Friday night following the Avon-Terre Haute South opener.

In 2A, Covenant Christian plays Park Tudor in Friday’s second game at University.
