TEMPLE HILLS, MD — A woman is in the hospital after Prince George’s County police said her boyfriend shot her during a domestic incident early Tuesday morning. Police later found the suspect dead inside a vehicle, and investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting was reported around 7:15 a.m. in the 5300 block of Fisher Road. According to police, the woman told officers that her boyfriend fired at her before leaving the area in a vehicle.
Officers responding to the call soon spotted a vehicle that matched the description they had been given. That led them to a traffic stop in the 4800 block of St. Barnabas Road.
Police traced the suspect vehicle during the response
Police said the vehicle they stopped had heavily tinted windows, but investigators determined it was the car connected to the shooting. The stop happened while officers were still working to locate the person accused in the domestic attack.
What started as a shooting call then turned into a barricade situation, according to police. Officers attempted to get the suspect out of the vehicle, but the encounter did not end there.
Authorities have not said how long the standoff lasted before they moved closer to the vehicle. The sequence of events, however, connected the original shooting scene with the later stop on St. Barnabas Road.
Suspect found dead inside the vehicle
When officers eventually approached the car, they found the suspect dead inside. Police said he was the only person in the vehicle and that investigators believe he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No other injuries were reported from the stop itself, and police did not describe any additional threats to the public. The focus of the investigation remains on what happened after the domestic shooting and before officers found the suspect.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police did not immediately release details about the extent of her injuries.
Domestic violence call began on Fisher Road
The initial police response centered on the 5300 block of Fisher Road in Temple Hills. That is where officers were sent after receiving the domestic shooting call shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday.
According to police, the woman identified the shooter as her boyfriend and said he fled in a vehicle after the attack. That account helped officers narrow their search as they looked for the suspect’s car in the area.
The case underscores how quickly domestic incidents can turn dangerous and how police response can move from a home block to nearby roadways in a matter of minutes.
Police describe a tragic scene for both families
A Prince George’s County police spokesperson called the incident tragic and said it would be difficult for the victim, the victim’s family and the suspect’s family. The department said its hearts and prayers were with everyone involved.
The department has not identified either the woman or the man involved in the shooting. Police also have not said whether detectives recovered a firearm from the vehicle.
