Hairspray is as delightful as ever

After 20 years, “Hairspray” the musical is still just as joyful and energetic as it has always been. The original book has some great heart and a clever sense of humor. In addition, the musical has one great song after another. This touring production should leave you smiling and cheering all night long. Based on John Waters’ 1988 cult film of the same name, “Hairspray” takes place in Baltimore, Maryland in the year 1962. The story centers on a plump teenage girl named Tracy Turnblad, whose lifelong dream is to dance on the local TV dance program known as “The Corny Collins Show.” When Tracy wins a role on the show and becomes an overnight sensation, she launches a campaign to integrate the show.

“Hairspray” is about the 60s. Change is on the horizon and the civil rights movement is gaining strength. With new friends in unlikely places, Tracy’s optimism and determination helps her to fulfil this dream, but of course – it won’t come easy.

Along with a full-hearted story, “Hairspray” is piled bouffant high with glowing soundtracks which features tracks “I Can Hear the Bells,” “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” which make this musical an unmissable instant classic. So, shake those hips in any direction and don’t miss “Hairspray” while it’s here in your backyard.
